What Does it take to Get Published? Join Transfer’s Editorial Staff and Find Out!

The new Transfer issue two students solicit you to purchase at a folding table on the first floor of the Humanities building every semester? That was the result of roughly twenty undergrad Creative Writing students with varying literary tastes and writing styles coming together in CW 640 to read, analyze, discuss and debate over numerous submissions, helping a small team of student editors select stories and poems to represent SFSU’s writers in a single volume. By taking CW 640 you’ll not only get the inside scoop on the competition and what the editors are looking for, you’ll also experience the publication process first-hand, develop editorial skills such as copy-editing, and get that much closer to learning how to refine your work for established literary magazines everywhere!

Most courses in the Creative Writing program encourage students to consider a peer’s work as unfinished and discuss craft in order to improve the piece in the future. In these courses, a student’s work is considered as a draft, so evaluative remarks are often unhelpful. Plus, the writer is present, it’s not like you can offer a thumbs up/thumbs down assessment without inflating or wounding the writer’s ego. Submitting Online to Transfer

Literary Submission Guidelines

Transfer Magazine is no longer accepting literary submissions online.

However, you can download the cover letter here and fill out the necessary information. (NOTE: Adobe Reader will NOT save edits made to PDF forms. You will not be able to submit digitally on your computer if Adobe reader is your only PDF reader). Be sure to print and attach your cover letters to each of your pieces.

We allow up to three fiction, nonfiction and drama submissions, and five poetry submissions per person.

Art Submission Guidelines

We’re looking for photography and other forms of visual art be they sketches, paintings or digital created by current San Francisco State students to feature in Transfer’s next issue! Your artwork could even be on the cover of the magazine. We especially encourage journalism, photography and other fine arts majors to submit.

We only accept art digitally and will NOT accept images of a PPI (pixels per inch) lower than 300. For the best results, please set your digital cameras and scanners at a high PPI. Attach your high quality art files to an email including your full name and telephone number to transfermagazine@gmail.com. Please name the subject of your email “transfer art submission.”

Submitting Hard Copies to Transfer

To submit hardcopies you can either pick up cover sheets at the Creative Writing office at Hum 380, the Transfer office in Hum 372 or download the PDF to print. Make sure to fill out one cover letter per submission. Turn in four copies of each submission with each coversheet either at the Transfer mailbox in Hum 380 or at the Transfer office.

We only accept work from San Francisco State students. You may submit up to three fiction, nonfiction and drama submissions, and five poetry submissions. Do not include your name on the submissions themselves.
